Andrei Gamarț
Artist ProfileAndrei Gamarț, born in 1980 in the Republic of Moldova, is a contemporary artist based in Bucharest, Romania, known for his evocative works inspired by poetry and literature. “When I reflect upon it, I can see that it's a journey full of twists and turns. To where exactly is yet to be seen. I take great care in the process; each step is thoroughly investigated. I observe phenomena from a distance; taking note of objects, images and words that can seem trivial but may trigger attention, such as how the light falls upon a surface, and how, firstly, flowers appear upon trees, and then there are only the leaves, then the seemingly lifeless body. “ (Excerpt from Andrei Gamarț - “Short introduction: a direction”) -
Artistic Positioning
Andrei Gamarț
Window I, 2020Andrei Gamarț’s work embodies painting as a reflection of human experience, emphasising accountability and transformation within contemporary narratives. The image is a mist from which echoes and shadows emerge; it is a metamorphosis that contains within itself all stages of change. It is both flow and renewed fulfilment, a space where the visible and the invisible succeed one another in a perpetual interrogation of the object.
The image of a thing is an uninterrupted flicker of appearances and reflections, shadows of thought that take possession of the first obstacle they encounter, a material field of attributes contested between seeing and vision. Its luminous and familiar face originates in a world of shadows and mirrors, of planes hidden from sight. Even in the absence of the object, its image appears just as vividly to us, for sight is not about things themselves, but about the way they pass through time or endure.

Critical Recognition
“Gamarț’s work mirrors various stages of the history of painting, of challenging our cultural memory as well as their surrealist content reflecting our ambiguous notions and understanding of the world we live in.” - Beral Madra -
